Like a thief in the dark of the night, age has slowly but surely crept up on our beloved dog. The dear little dog that to us has always remained an eternal puppy.
Watching her at play, it was so easy to believe that she, unlike other dogs, would be the one to triumph over time and old age. However, as sure as the seconds that tick by so unrelentlessly, merciless time was catching up with our little girl. The latest visit to the vet confirmed our worst fear. She is blind in one eye and almost blind in the other.
Yet, it amazes me that she still bounds around the house with all the energy of a tennis ball, dances and twirls like a ballerina and jumps on places I would not dare try.
Now I sit by her, watching her breathe ever so peacefully in sleep. Her little paw reaches out to me and she lets out a contented sigh. Her eyelids flutter and I can only imagine what she is dreaming of.
I imagine that she is young again in her dreams, full of the limitless and childlike energy that I love so much. Perhaps she is dreaming of a sunny afternoon at the beach, where she will be chasing the passing birds. Where she can see again like she once used to, back in a world which made more sense.
Perhaps that is what I dream of, if only for myself.
Time waits for no one. But in a corner of my mind, a happy little dog plays on....unspoilt by age and untouched by time.
